SACRAMENTO – On Sunday, August 21 at 1 p.m.,
mother/daughter poets, Staajabu and V.S. Chochezi will
be one of the honorees at the Coalition of Labor Union
Women’s Annual Awards Reception. The poetic duo,
known by many as the award winning poetry team,
Straight Out Scribes, will also perform their dynamic
thought-provoking poetry as CLUW celebrates the 85th
anniversary of women’s right to vote in the USA. The
event will be held at the Sacramento Central Labor
Council Hall, 2840 El Centro Road,
Not only are The Scribes one of the most sought after
poetry teams in the area, they are also community
activists and union members. Staajabu is a member of
Coalition of University Employees (CUE) at UC Davis,
and V.S. is a member of Sierra College Faculty
Association (SCFA. They have been instrumental in the
campaign to save the life of death row political
prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal, who before his
incarceration was the president of the Association of
Black Journalists, in Philadelphia.
The keynote speaker will be Kim Salter, the state
president of the National Organization of Women (NOW).
Other honorees will include: Leisa Faulkner, Carolyn
Negrete, and Teresa Villasenor. Refreshments will be
provided. The public is invited and a $25 donation is
