Brethren, arise, arise! You cannot be more oppressed than you have been

- you cannot suffer greater cruelties than you have already… Awake, awake!

Let your motto be resistance, resistance, resistance!

Culture is a Weapon: the Legacy Continues” Benefit for Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Sundiata Acoli and Sekou Odinga in Tribute to Gill Scott Heron and Tupac Shakur

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

{New York, New York, USA} March 15th, 2012 — On Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th, 2012, from 2pm-10pm, The Safiya Bukhari/Albert Nuh Washington Foundation, Grassroots Artist Movement, Universal Zulu Nation and community activists will present a two-day event entitled “Culture is a Weapon: The Legacy Continues” in tribute to Tupac Shakur and Gil Scott-Heron; hosted by True Skool Radio Afrika Bambaataa, Tawfiyq "Dr. Shaka Zulu" Aziz and Lord Yoda X.

This will be a fundraising benefit in support of three Freedom Fighters who have been u.s. held Political Prisoners/Prisoners of War for more than three decades: Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Sundiata Acoli and Sekou Odinga. This event is to highlight their cases and the inherent injustices within the prison industrial complex that disproportionately targets poor and working-class Black and Brown communities across this country, and that there are many political prisoners held in the dungeons of the u.s. prison system decades following the Liberation struggles of the 1960’s and 70s.

The event mixes various aspects of Hip Hop culture with music, spoken word, panel discussions, graffiti/art, while bringing two generations into awareness on the topic of Political Prisoners. Friday is set to the backdrop of Spoken Word Artists with Panel discussions moderated by Abiodun of the Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Autumn Ashanti; also featuring. Saturday, the event will include the sale and art exhibition of works by Emory Douglas, SEN One, Carlito Rivera, Sophia Dawson and many others, with slam and hip-hop performances by M1 of Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Rebel Diaz, Maroon Society, Hassan Salaam and many more.

True Hip Hop Culture is universal and through this event it will allow those, who want to show their support to our political prisoners, the ability to promote global solidarity, equality and social justice. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the defense funds of political prisoners Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Sundiata Acoli and Sekou Odinga who have sacrificed so much for the self-determination and liberation of oppressed communities.

Media Advisory: Press conference will convene on Friday, March 16th at 1:00pm. Media interested in covering the event must contact Bro. Shep at 212-650-5008 or email: panthershepcat@aol.com by Thursday, 6:00pm with the full name of the individuals who will represent the media outlet, Press ID along with Drivers License (or proper picture I.D.).
